Gaiting Pictures

When you show a German Shepherd Dog,  50% of the evaluation  is on gait.    And part of  the gait is the front opening and under reach.  Of course there is moving true, timing, coming and going, etc. and that is all looked at also, but the side gait is the first impression.

Front opening is measured by drawing a line straight down from tip of the nose, when head is in normal front extended position for moving. The front
toes must touch that imaginary line or extend in front of the line to have
adequate reach.

This is a picture of grandmother to most of my dogs.  This is Janie, and
she can move ! Manhaattans Calamity Jane has gone to the rainbow bridge,
but her progeny are still winning in the show ring.

Underreach is measured by how far ahead of and beside where the front foot was, that the rear foot lands. puppies will often step on their front foot until they learn to move slightly to the side ( crab)  with the rear feet.
